Rendezvous Observation City – Scarborough Beach
Perth folk will remember Observation City at Scarborough Beach of the 1980’s. It was the epitome of elegance and glamour. These days, frankly, it’s a bit of a white elephant, struggling with its illusions of past grandeur. This used to be one of the best hotels in Perth for kids, not so much now. However, as a staycation – or a solid family holiday option – we love it.
It feels like a resort, with a palm tree ringed pool and of course magnificent ocean views. Rooms are large, clean and with bathtubs. The best thing about the Rendezvous Observation city is the location – right on Scarborough Beach. With a playground nearby and a wonderful beachside atmosphere, this is most definitely the place to stay for those that don’t get beach side holidays often!
The reason this hotel is included in our affordable family hotels in Perth list is that it offers great deals from time to time. You can get a room for as little as $130 a night for a lower floor and a side view of the ocean. However, you still get a view of the ocean. The only downside is that you have to pay for parking $15/night. There are also good restaurant options very close. Check here for current rates to stay at the Rendezvous Observation City Hotel.
The Mercure Perth hits our list of best hotels in Perth for kids, as we stayed here as a mid-winter getaway. Their cheapest rooms are very small, and with views onto the roofs of other buildings.
The main reason we stayed at this Perth hotel was to swim in rooftop pool which is slightly heated. For a winter getaway you can’t go past this! This is one of the best hotels in Perth for a winter family getaway because of the heated pool.
Parking was expensive, about $30 a night which was about a quarter of the room cost! The staff are very friendly and we were greeted by small toys upon arrival, and a kid friendly funky foyer. These were the main kid friendly aspects of the hotel, as well as very friendly waitresses who said they loved it when they had kids come to their restaurant! Check here for current rates to stay at the Mercure Perth.
The Mounts Bay Waters Hotel is one of our favorite hotels on the list; and especially great if you want to explore many of Perth city’s sights on foot. It is one of the best hotels in Perth for families for many reasons.
This Perth family accommodation is located almost in the CBD. These apartments have everything you might need. They include an ample lounge and kitchen, washer and dryer, bathtub and a balcony. The perfect amount of room if you want to self cater or spread out with the kiddos.
You are about 10 minutes walk from Elizabeth Quay and its attractions. From there, you can the ferry over to the South Perth area, and visit the zoo. We ate in Central Perth and then walked home the 15 minutes back to the hotel in the evening and felt very safe. Highly recommended by us! Check here for current rates to stay at the Mounts Bay Waters Hotel.
This is one of the best hotels in Perth for a long stay. Also, if you don’t have your own wheels it is close to all the action of the city. The City Stay Apartments have an accessible location right across from the Harbourtown retail outlet shopping center. Which is great if you want to do some shopping! It’s also within walking distance of the city sights like Hay Street Mall, the Elizabeth Quay area, and even Kings Park!
These are large, a little dated apartments that suit if you like to have separate rooms and lots of space. Also, they have a small kitchenette or kitchen, so a good option for self catering. We visited friends there, and swam in the modest pool with them. It was definitely a popular option for families in the vicinity of $140 a night. Especially if you don’t have transport. This hotel is well connected by the CAT buses that run around the city and is approximately 300 meters from the train and bus stations, so you have Perth at your fingertips! Check here for current rates to stay at the City Stay Apartment Hotel.
Another central city place we have an eye on is the Mantra on Hay which has a heated indoor pool. The rooms look clean, modern and with balconies. We think it looks great so have included it on the list! Check here for currents rates for current rates to stay at the Mantra On Hay.
We stayed at the Metro Hotel on Canning Hotel in South Perth. We very nearly didn’t include it in our list of best hotels in Perth as it was slightly seedy (be warned!). However, it was also very cheap at about $120/night AND the rooms have the most amazing views of the Perth City Skyline.
We stayed here for New Year’s Eve to see the midnight fireworks only to find out they have them on Australia Day (don’t make the same mistake we did). The cleaner’s attention to detail was not super, but overall it was an adequate stay. The pool area was lacking attention. It was in a patch of dying grass, with no facilities around it – that said, it was clean and we had a wonderful time swimming in it! Read reviews before booking this, to make sure it suits your idea of good family accommodation! Check here for currents rates to stay at the Metro Hotel South Perth.
Where To Stay In Fremantle – Other Options For A Perth Family Accommodation
Old world Fremantle is an excellent place for families to base themselves to explore all of Perth city. If you don’t have a car it is well connected to the city by train, and also easy to walk around and see the major sites. Additionally there is the famous “Cappuccino Strip” packed with delicious eateries, and the Fremantle Markets where you can shop too your heart’s content. Definitely a great place to base yourself for a stay in Western Australia’s capital.
This was originally the Esplanade Hotel, one of Fremantle’s landmarks, and one of Perth’s most iconic accommodations. Apart from having an old world grandeur, this place is brilliantly located. It’s across from the Fremantle Esplanade with a playground and ferris wheel. It is also a a short walk from the harbor with fantastic seafood restaurants and Little Creatures Brewery.
There is a wealth of things to do in Fremantle, just a short walk from this very attractive hotel. We have stayed in Rydges hotels before, and they have a high standard of quality. With the gorgeous pools and gardens, we think this is a wonderful place to stay! This is one of the best hotels in Perth in our opinion Check here for current rates to stay at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle.
Pier 21 is located out of the centre of the Fremantle, but this is still a gorgeous place to stay as a family. With spectacular views from the rooms (check out the pictures below!) these ample size rooms have small kitchenettes, and easy access to the river foreshore which is like your own personal playground. A lovely family hotel in Fremantle and a great hotel in Perth for kids. Check here for current rates to stay at the Pier 21 Fremantle.
This I another place that we would like to stay, for a semi rural wine tasting getaway, located in the Swan Valley some half an hour away from Central Perth. Mumma Traveller stayed her for a couple of conferences during her “working” life and remembers it as a beautiful hotel with beautiful pool and plenty to do and see. This would NOT be a great base if you were going to see the sights of Perth, but yes, if you were going to do a rural getaway this would be an good location. However, only if you had your own transport.
We are planning to use this for a base to visit Whiteman Park or the Outback Splash at the Maze which has Australia’s largest water slide playground. Our kids would be keen to jump on the giant jumping pillow, meet native animals, and play in the mazes. Check here for current rates to stay at the Novotel Vines.
North of the River – Perth Family Accommodation
Karrinyup Waters Resort gets a thumbs up for affordable cabin accommodation with 1 or 2 bedrooms, a nice lake with ducks, a playground with BBQ areas and an oasis of a swimming pool. This Caravan Park is located quite a distance from the central city and is best for people who have their own transport. Check here for current rates to stay at the Karrinyup Wateres Resort.
