We were beyond thrilled when we learned that we would be able to see the world famous Field of Light Western Australia!
As soon as we learned that this installation was coming to Albany, Western Australia, we booked our accommodation! The brainchild of Bruce Munro, this spectacular illuminated field of lights has toured London and the USA, and the Field of Light Uluru was so popular that they have extended their time in Australia’s Red Centre.
Here are our tips to get the most out of your visit to the Field of Light Western Australia.
Do it: Visit the Field of Light: Avenue of Honour
Firstly, we would definitely recommend making a trip down to Albany this summer as the Field of Light: Avenue of Honour will be in place in Albany from October 2018 until April 2019.
Time your visit for maximum effect.
Wait to arrive until just after sunset. We arrived quite early and the magic of the lights were not fully evident. For wow factor with the kids, arriving after dark was the best, but wasn’t too late for the kiddos.
Go prepared for bugs.
The night we visited the mosquitos were incredibly fierce – and we got bitten alive. Everyone around us was being bitten and complaining too. Wear thick clothing and lots of mosquito repellent. There was also a chilly wind so a jumper might be handy.
The Audio Guide is Ace
You can stream an audio guide from fieldoflightalbany.com.au/thetrail which brings to life the story of the Field of Light in 10 stops. Remember to bring your own headphones.
This is a memorial
As parents, we notice that our kids can be pretty exuberant at times! This was not the place for it. The overall atmosphere was quite like an art show crossed with a memorial. We always find that preparing our kids regarding behaviour helps them “tone it down”. This is a place that people come to pay their respects to the Anzac tradition and as a memorial it felt very subdued and respectful.
How long did we spend at the Field of Light Western Australia?
We spent about an hour in total.
