Perth Beach Accommodation
Without a doubt, Perth has some of the best city beaches in the world. The Perth ocean coastline stretches from one end of the city to the other. If you are looking for a uniquely Perth place to stay when on holiday, then a place that is near the beach – or even better, with ocean views, certainly makes for a memorable holiday.
The first question to answer is where to stay for the best Perth Beach accommodation? We like Scarborough Beach; it is a beautiful beach and still quite centrally located in the city. There is a vibe about Scarborough in the evening with several restaurants and a few places you can dance at as well.
There are not many places that could be described as ‘family resorts Perth’ but the Rendezvous Observation city definitely fits the bill. It feels like a resort, with a palm tree ringed pool and of course magnificent ocean views. Rooms are large, clean, and with bathtubs. The best thing about the Rendezvous Observation City is the location – right on Scarborough Beach. Our kids especially loved the balconies with the views over the Indian Ocean.
With a playground nearby and a wonderful beachside atmosphere, this is most definitely the place to stay for those that don’t get beachside holidays often!
Perth folk will remember Observation City at Scarborough Beach of the 1980s. It was the epitome of elegance and glamour. These days as a Perth family staycation – or a solid family holiday option – we love it.
The reason this hotel is included in our affordable family hotels in Perth list is that it offers great deals from time to time. You can get a room for as little as $130 a night for a lower floor and a side view of the ocean. However, you still get a view of the ocean. There are also good restaurant options very close. Check here for current rates to stay at the Rendezvous Observation City Hotel.
Another accommodation Scarborough Perth option is the Seashells Scarborough. This great Perth Beach accommodation is often where locals go for a little staycation as one of the best beach hotels in Perth.
These self-contained apartment-like rooms are a great option for couples and families alike. Not only can you enjoy the gorgeous beach but Seashells Scarborough also has two outdoor pools. Another cool feature is that both pool areas feature dining and bbq areas. This accommodation Scarborough Perth is great if you are not into dining in the local restaurants. This is a moderately priced Perth beach accommodation. For current rates at Seashells Scarborough check here.
Other Perth Beach Accommodation
To the north, there are two Perth family resorts. They are located relatively close together, about 3 minutes’ drive from one another (but 20 minutes walking)!
Sorrento Beach is well known for offering great family swimming and, as with all Perth beaches, the turquoise water contrasts perfectly against the pure white sand. There are also grassed areas and change rooms.
Near to Sorrento Beach is the lively Hillarys Boat Harbor, which features some excellent restaurants and cafes, as well as the highly recommended AQWA. Here, you can read our Tips For Visiting The AQWA Aquarium With Kids.
Also, this whole area is not known as the ‘Sunset Coast’ for nothing. If you head down to any one of the beaches in this area at sunset you are sure to be in for a truly stunning sunset!
Hillarys Harbour Resort
In the marina at Hillarys Boat harbour, they call themselves Perth’s premier marina resort. This is one of the cooler Perth beach hotels as it is self-contained apartment-style rooms that all offer views of the Indian Ocean.
They offer different rooms from one-bedroom to suites. To find current rates at Hillarys Harbour Resort look here.
Quality Resort Sorrento Beach
Another great option is the Quality Resort Sorrento Beach which offers amenities like free parking and wifi. Not to mention it has an outdoor heated pool, bbq area, and a sauna. If you are traveling with a large family call to inquire about their three-bedroom rooms!
This really is a great value if traveling with a large group. For current rates at Quality Resort, Sorrento Beach check here.
Fun Fact about Perth Western Australia!
On February 20th, 1962 John Glenn became the first American astronaut to orbit the earth. Upon Glenn passing over Perth, he said that the city was visible from space and all lit up. Thus Perth becoming known as the “City Of Lights”. Interestingly this was no accident. The people of Perth in solidarity with Glenn’s passing over the city rushed out into their backyards with flashlights and torches, turned on their porch lights, and lit up the city so that it could be extra visible to Glenn.
Downtown Perth Family Accommodation (The Perth CBD)
Like any city, the centre of Perth offers a lot to do and see! Especially if you have decided to not hire a car, the centre of Perth city provides the best transport hub. If staying in the CBD you should get familiar with the Perth CAT (Central Area Transit) buses are free and you can get on and off as many times as you like.
Don’t miss a trip to Kings Park Perth and, if you are traveling with kids, you will want them to explore some of Kings Park’s awesome playgrounds. It is easy to get to Kings Park by taking Transperth bus route 935, which travels from St Georges Terrace right into the heart of Kings Park. This service is free for passengers traveling from the CBD to Kings Park and runs every 10 minutes on weekdays and 15 minutes on weekends
The Mercure Perth hits our list of best hotels in Perth for kids, as we stayed here as a mid-winter getaway. Their cheapest rooms are very small, and with views onto the roofs of other buildings.
The main reason we stayed at this Perth hotel was to swim in the rooftop pool which is slightly heated. For a winter getaway, you can’t go past this! This is one of the best hotels in Perth for a winter family getaway because of the heated pool.
Parking was expensive, about $30 a night which was about a quarter of the room cost! The staff is very friendly and we were greeted by small toys upon arrival and a kid-friendly funky foyer. These were the main kid-friendly aspects of the hotel, as well as very friendly waitresses who said they loved it when they had kids come to their restaurant! Check here for current rates to stay at the Mercure Perth.
The Mounts Bay Waters Hotel is one of our favorite hotels on the list; and especially great if you want to explore many of Perth city’s sights on foot. It is one of the best hotels in Perth for families for many reasons.
This Perth family accommodation is located almost in the CBD. These apartments have everything you might need. They include an ample lounge and kitchen, washer and dryer, bathtub and a balcony. The perfect amount of room if you want to self cater or spread out with the kiddos.
You are about 10 minutes walk from Elizabeth Quay and its attractions. From there, you can ferry over to the South Perth area, and visit the zoo. We ate in Central Perth and then walked home the 15 minutes back to the hotel in the evening and felt very safe. Highly recommended by us! Check here for current rates to stay at the Mounts Bay Waters Hotel.
This is one of the best hotels in Perth for a long stay. Also, if you don’t have your own wheels it is close to all the action of the city. The City Stay Apartments have an accessible location right across from the Harbourtown retail outlet shopping center. This is great if you want to do some shopping! It’s also within walking distance of the city sights like Hay Street Mall, the Elizabeth Quay area, and even Kings Park!
These are large, somewhat dated apartments that suit if you like to have separate rooms and lots of space. Also, they have a small kitchenette or kitchen, so a good option for self-catering. We visited friends there and swam in the modest pool with them. It was definitely a popular option for families in the vicinity of $140 a night. Especially if you don’t have transport. This hotel is well connected by the CAT buses that run around the city and is approximately 300 meters from the train and bus stations, so you have Perth at your fingertips! Check here for current rates to stay at the City Stay Apartment Hotel.
Another central city place we have an eye on is the Mantra on Hay which has a heated indoor pool. The rooms look clean, modern and with balconies. We think it looks great so have included it on the list! Check here for currents rates for current rates to stay at the Mantra On Hay.
Holiday Inn Perth
The Holiday Inn Perth is one of the tried and true Perth accommodation for families. It is located in the heart of Perth CBD and is only 12 miles from the airport.
One of the most appealing aspects of the Holiday Inn Perth is that kids under 12 stay for free and also eat for free in the on-site restaurant. If you on a budget or looking for ways to save money when visiting Perth with kids, this could be a really awesome find! This hotel offers your basic Perth family hotels rooms. A few drawbacks are that it has no pool, and you have to pay 24 AUD a day for parking. For current rates at the Holiday Inn Perth look here.
Crown Metropol Perth
The Crown Metropol Perth is an upscale hotel. The style of the hotel makes it a great family resorts Perth option if that is what you are looking for. With a stunning outdoor pool area and more luxe-type room accommodations, this is a contemporary hotel.
They have basic one-bedrooms up to a luxe apartment mega-suite with three king beds. If you are looking for upscale family accommodation in Perth, this is your hotel. Check here for current rates at the Crown Metropol Perth.
Perth Airport Hotels
Perth’s airport is located in industrial areas, and the ride to the airport is not particularly attractive!
If you take the bus you need to allow 50 minutes from the central city – and if you take a car around 35 minutes from most parts of the city or beaches.
If you have an early flight you might enjoy a bit more of a sleep in so that is why we recommend staying at a Perth Airport Hotel for early or late arrivals!
Useful Perth Travel Tip
Perth’s Airport terminals can be quite confusing, and it’s a 15min drive between terminals 1 and 2, and terminals 3 and 4, you don’t want to turn up at the wrong Perth terminal
We stayed at the Metro Hotel on Canning Hotel in South Perth. We very nearly didn’t include it in our list of best hotels in Perth as it was slightly seedy (be warned!). However, it was also very cheap at about $120/night AND the rooms have the most amazing views of the Perth City Skyline.
We stayed here for New Year’s Eve to see the midnight fireworks only to find out they have them on Australia Day (don’t make the same mistake we did). The cleaner’s attention to detail was not super, but overall it was an adequate stay. Read reviews before booking this, to make sure it suits your idea of good family accommodation! Check here for currents rates to stay at the Metro Hotel South Perth.
The Metro Hotel South Perth is also our ‘go-to’ Airport Hotel for our last few trips where we arrived in Perth at midnight. For $110 – $130/night, you can’t go wrong!
The Aloft is a mid-range family accommodation Perth option. Many of the rooms have spectacular views of Perth and the surrounding areas. The Aloft Perth also has some really great amenities with a roof-top splash pool, gym, and several on-site food and beverage options.
They can also accommodate couples up to larger family groups. They offer your basic hotel room layouts as well as several different suite options. Check here for current rates at the Aloft Perth.
Discovery Parks – Perth Airport Caravan Park
If you have a car and are looking for a good family base close to the airport we have stayed at the Discovery Parks – Perth airport a couple of times. It is just a 15-minute drive and when you arrive there is plenty of fresh air and space (in contrast to some of the other places along Great Eastern Highway.) The 2 bedroom units have a double bed in one room, and bunk beds in another; everything has been clean and in good condition. We also like that it has safe off-street parking and the cabins are self-contained.
After a long flight our kids are only too happy to run around the grounds or play in the pool – reasons we have chosen this Caravan Park as opposed to a hotel or apartment as a Perth Airport Hotel.
Fremantle Family Hotels
Why Would You Choose To Stay In Fremantle
If you are looking for a city that feels like a town, then Fremantle might be perfect for you. Most of the major attractions are within walking distance of the hotels, there is a fantastic park to play at the Fremantle Esplanade, and not to mention all the great eating options in Fremantle.
You should definitely eat out at the Fisherman’s Wharf, or go for a wander along the atmospheric Cappucino strip. Everyone will love a wander at the Fremantle Markets!
Old world Fremantle is an excellent place for families to base themselves to explore all of Perth city. If you don’t have a car it is well connected to the city by train, and also easy to walk around and see the major sites. Additionally, there is the famous “Cappuccino Strip” packed with delicious eateries, and the Fremantle Markets where you can shop til your heart’s content. Definitely a great place to base yourself for a stay in Western Australia’s capital.
This was originally the Esplanade Hotel, one of Fremantle’s landmarks, and one of Perth’s most iconic accommodations. Apart from having an old-world grandeur, this place is brilliantly located. It’s across from the Fremantle Esplanade with a playground and Ferris Wheel. It is also a short walk from the harbor with fantastic seafood restaurants and Little Creatures Brewery.
There is a wealth of things to do in Fremantle, just a short walk from this very attractive hotel. We have stayed in Rydges hotels before, and they have a high standard of quality. With the gorgeous pools and gardens, we think this is a wonderful place to stay! This is one of the best hotels in Perth in our opinion Check here for current rates to stay at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle.
Pier 21 is located out of the centre of Fremantle, but this is still a gorgeous place to stay as a family. With spectacular views from the rooms (check out the pictures below!) these ample size rooms have small kitchenettes and easy access to the river foreshore which is like your own personal playground. A lovely family hotel in Fremantle and a great hotel in Perth for kids. Check here for current rates to stay at the Pier 21 Fremantle.
North Of The River – Perth Family Accommodation
Karrinyup Waters Resort gets a thumbs up for affordable cabin accommodation with 1 or 2 bedrooms, a nice lake with ducks, a playground with BBQ areas, and an oasis of a swimming pool. This Caravan Park has located quite a distance from the central city and is best for people who have their own transport. Check here for current rates to stay at the Karrinyup Waters Resort.
Are You Looking For Swan Valley Family Accommodation
For visitors to Perth looking to escape the city, then the Swan Valley might be a unique option. You can wake up to the sound of birds, the silence of the country, and lots of fresh country air. There are some great family resorts in the Swan Valley and this is a good option for families looking for a country escape – while having close access to the city. One of the best places to see koalas and kangaroos in Perth, the Caversham Wildlife Park, is located in the Swan Valley.
This I another place that we would like to stay, for a semi-rural wine tasting getaway, located in the Swan Valley some half an hour away from Central Perth. Mumma Traveller stayed here for a couple of conferences during her “working” life and remembers it as a beautiful hotel with a beautiful pool and plenty to do and see. This would NOT be a great base if you were going to see the sights of Perth, but yes, if you were going to do a rural getaway this would be a good location. However, only if you had your own transport.
We are planning to use this as a base to visit Whiteman Park or the Outback Splash at the Maze which has Australia’s largest water slide playground. Our kids would be keen to jump on the giant jumping pillow, meet native animals, and play in the mazes. Check here for current rates to stay at the Novotel Vines.
Settlers Rest Farmstay
Settlers Rest Farmstay is a charming farm property located in the Swan Valley. There is only one 3-bedroom cottage located on the property. While it is rural, and a bit rustic, they do take care of all the amenities. The cottage is stock with linens, towels, and even gumboots! It is quaint and historic but still has a tv and even a fireplace in the lounge area.
The farm has animals like goats, sheep, lambs, cows, alpacas, horses, chickens & guinea pigs. They encourage the kids to join them in the afternoon at the stables to watch them put the horses up for the evening. They even encourage the kids to collect eggs for the chickens that you can cook in your cottage. For more information on Settlers Rest Farmstay check out their website.
