To begin and as a background for this article, here is my summary of the things you need to know when buying women’s hiking boots in Australia.  Last month my mum took one look at my beloved hiking shoes and stated – with characteristic honesty – “wow, you need new shoes”!  It’s true that this particular pair of Merrell hiking shoes for women had done thousands of kilometres over the years – but shoes can be like a good companion.  You want to stick with them.

When you have hiked with one brand for many years, it is easy to just drop into your local shop and buy a new pair of Merrell ladies’ walking boots.  However, in this case, the truth was I’d been using my hiking shoes for everyday wear, even though they didn’t look that great with a pair of jeans.  So my latest purchase of women’s hiking boots here in Australia was something more suited to my current needs.  Practical and sturdy yes, but also attractive so that I could throw them on with my jeans and still look pretty good.

My Personal Experience of Ladies’ Hiking Boots

I was a relatively late bloomer when it came to hiking and trekking.  Initially taking on a few epic hikes like the Tiger Leaping Gorge in China and then the Inca Trail as part of my world travels during my mid-20s.  Little did I know then that I’d settle in Cusco, Peru, in the heart of the Andes Mountains, and that exploring that beautiful landscape would become a lifelong passion.

For me, it wasn’t just the beauty of the mountains, nor the achievement of crossing a series of mountain passes.  It was the discovery of the people and stories along the way that I grew to love.  So I hiked and trekked and explored for years.  I wore out a couple of pairs of women’s hiking boots in the process.  In 2006 I co-founded Apus Peru Adventure Travel Specialists, an adventure trekking agency based in Cusco, Peru.  The rest, as they say, is history.

We focused on offering unique, off the beaten track adventures designed to connect people with the real Peru.  Many people who go into business know that the pressures of clients and paperwork means less passion and adventure and sadly, that was indeed the case for me.  I became desk-bound and my boots got dusty.  Having three children in a nine-year period also meant that any long-distance adventure trekking was seriously curtailed.  Yet those mountains and trails still call to me every day!  I can’t wait to get out and do some serious long-distance treks yet again!

If you are interested in trekking in Peru, we have loads of resources.  Below are some places to start.  Even though they are geared towards trekking with kids, the information is great for adults as well.  Also, check out the Apus Peru website for more information and guided tours.

What to look for in Hiking Shoes in Australia

Fit

The fit is, without doubt, the very first factor to consider when investing in good hiking boots in Australia – or indeed anywhere.  Don’t be tempted to place form above function.  They may be stylish, but hobbling around in too-tight a hiking shoe – or one that gives you blisters – is not a good look.  And, things do not improve as the walk progresses.

So do try out your new women’s walking boots in Australia before you take them to a trail.  If you normally use footwear accessories like insoles or hiking socks, do use these when testing.  Make sure you walk up and down some hills or stairs when trying them out too.

Usage

As touched on above, you may not need the best waterproof hiking boots Australia has to offer if you only go on shorter, less challenging walks.  So do bear in mind how long your hikes will be and how tricky the terrain might be when making your choice.

Breathability

Breathable boots are a good idea – and not least because they smell better.  Many hiking boots that are women’s in Australia are made for breathability, as companies are aware that many people trek during hot weather.

As mentioned below, it is possible to buy women’s walking boots in Australia that is water-resistant as well as breathable.  Just look out for technical fabrics like eVent and Gore-Tex.

Water Resistance

When I was younger and doing a lot of hiking, leather high ankle boots were considered awesome for keeping moisture at bay.  I used to polish them often to keep them supple.  Now, many manufacturers use technical materials like Gore-Tex or eVent.

Both of these materials are breathable as well as water-resistant, meaning you don’t have to choose between the two when buying women’s hiking boots that are waterproof.

The Best Hiking Boots for Women | FAQs

Why focus on Women’s Hiking Shoes in Australia?

We are Australian, and all Aussies know that it’s good to have detailed and informative local information.  Frankly, it’s a bit frustrating when you read a fantastic article – only to realise that all the hiking boots for women featured come with high overseas shipping rates or you can’t return them without significant cost!

So having local information is awesome when it comes to choosing the best women’s hiking boots available in Australia.

What’s the Difference between Women’s Hiking Boots and Hiking Shoes?

There are various kinds of women’s hiking boots in Australia for sale.  Hiking shoes are shaped more like trainers, while trekking or hiking boots have higher tops to give added support around the ankles.

The height of this additional section may vary, so there are mid and full height ladies hiking boots available in Australia.  More height means more support, although neither can completely protect you against twisting your ankle!  Boots with a higher top are heavier, so this is something to keep in mind.  Considering what you’ll wear them for is also essential when making your selection.

Another option is trail running shoes, which are designed for rapid movement over uneven ground.  They are lighter and less supportive than the typical women’s waterproof boots available in Australia but are good for fitness use.

What do I Need Hiking Shoes or Boots for?

If you are going to be doing a long-distance hike, then you need to invest in the best hiking boots Australia has to offer.  Whether it’s walking the Cradle Mountain Overland Track in Tasmania, the Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia, or the Larapinta track in the NT, hiking the Heyson Trail (Australia’s longest trail) or trekking in the Australian Alps, you are going to need some seriously supportive walking shoes with high tops.

There are two key factors at play when you buy ladies’ trekking boots, shoes or hiking boots in Australia.  These are the terrain you’ll be tackling and whether you’re carrying a pack.  As a general rule, the tougher the terrain the more robust the boot you’ll need.  If you are carrying a heavy load, then this is also true.

Unfortunately, many of us are not able to take to those longer trails.  We either do day hikes or even short walks.  Given I have small children, I spend much of my time hiking with kids.

Do I Need the Best Hiking Boots in Australia for Easier Hikes and Day Walks?

If you only tend to take shorter hikes and walks, then you might not need to invest in high-end women’s waterproof hiking boots in Australia.  For many, a heavy-duty high top hiking boot isn’t really required.  The added weight is unnecessary and the extreme support and grip may be more than you need when not undertaking long treks or carrying a backpack.

If you tend to do shorter hikes, then a reliable pair of trekking shoes for female wear may be ideal.  Unless you prefer that extra support offered by high cut footwear.  Sometimes it’s really down to personal preference!
