I first visited the Amazon back in 2002 – and I kid you not when I say that I loved my lodge so much I extended my stay.  There followed many more adventures in the Iquitos region of Peru, as I followed tributaries of the Amazon southward.  Later on, I volunteered in the Peruvian jungle as we saw the impacts of illegal forest logging first hand. It’s no exaggeration to say that I absolutely love the Amazon jungle.  

Peruvian Amazon lodges come in all varieties, from rustic eco-retreats deep in the jungle to luxurious lodges overlooking the mighty Amazon River!

Exploring the Peruvian Amazon is an experience like no other, and the lodge you choose can make all the difference.

Choose Your Gateway – Puerto Maldonado Vs Iquitos

The first step is deciding on your gateway city. Would you prefer to arrive in Puerto Maldonado or in Iquitos? Puerto Maldonado Airport is one of the most popular gateways, as it has quick access to the southern Amazon and the Tambopata National Reserve. This area is perfect if you prefer not to travel far upon arrival.

Staying in the Amazon lodges in Puerto Maldonado gives you easy access to guided Amazon excursions and wildlife adventures.

Meanwhile, Iquitos is the main hub for the northern Amazon and the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. It’s only accessible by air or river, so it’s a great choice if you’re looking for a more remote and immersive experience. Some Peruvian Amazon lodges are located close to rivers or on the edge of the forest. They provide comfortable accommodations and easy access to guided jungle excursions without venturing too far.

Other lodges are tucked deep within the rainforest. It’s great if you’re seeking a truly off-the-grid experience.

Traveling with Kids?

If you have the time and budget, then I would absolutely take my children on an Amazon rainforest experience. There is truly no better way for kids to experience the wonder of the “lungs of the earth” than by seeing the Amazon for themselves. While my youngest (4.5 years) definitely loved our time in the rainforest, it was the oldest child (13 years) who got a lot out of the trip.

Rainforest Expeditions Lodges – Tambopata and Puerto Maldonado

Without a doubt, Rainforest Expeditions is one of the leading operators in the Puerto Maldonado area, and for good reason. Established in 1989, they are committed to the environment and conservation, and their jungle experiences are truly special.

There are three lodges to choose from:

1. Refugio Amazonas 

Location: Right side of Tambopata River, Tambopata 17000, Peru

Refugio Amazonas is a 32-bedroom lodge set within 200 hectares of private reserve in the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve. The lodge is constructed using a combination of traditional native materials, including a roof made entirely of palm fronds.

Reaching the lodge involves a one-hour road trip followed by a one-hour boat ride.

Refugio Amazonas serves as the headquarters of the Wired Amazon Program. Staying here, you can participate in scientific projects for the conservation of Tambopata.

When I was picking a jungle lodge for my children’s first Peruvian Amazon experience, I chose Refugio Amazonas – it ticks all the boxes for a unique,  high quality taste of the jungle. 

This is a great lodge to include on a trip to Peru with kids. They will surely have a blast checking the cameras placed along the trails.

2. Posada Amazonas 

Location: Right side of the Tambopata River, Ese Eja Native Community, Puerto Maldonado 17000, Peru

The first of the Rainforest Expeditions lodges, Posada Amazonas Lodge, Peru, is located within a 9,500-hectare communal reserve belonging to the Ese Eja native community of Infierno.

From Puerto Maldonado, it’s a one-hour road trip followed by a one-hour river journey along the Tambopata River. One of the benefits of staying at Posada Amazonas is that your visit directly supports the local community.

Like Refugio Amazonas, the rooms are open to the jungle and feature double beds, mosquito nets, bedside tables, and hammocks. Each room is decorated with bas-relief wood carvings that tell stories from Ese Eja traditions and includes a private bathroom with hot water. There are two room categories, suites and comfort rooms. The main lodge also offers free internet for guests.

The newly built canopy tower at Posada Amazonas rises over 40 metres and is built with scaffolding. A central banister staircase provides safe access to the platforms above, from where you can spot toucans, parrots, and macaws flying past.

A highlight of Posada Amazonas is the Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake, located thirty minutes by boat and forty-five minutes on foot from the lodge. Here, visitors may spot the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by about 60% of guests), along with lakeside wildlife such as caimans, hoatzins, and horned screamers.

Also of note is the Centro Ñape, a communal organisation that produces medicines from forest plants. They have created a trail explaining the different medicinal and practical uses of selected plants, including uña de gato (Cat’s Claw), which has gained popularity in the West.

3. Tambopata Research Center 

Location: Tambopata National Reserve, Right side of the Tambopata River, 17500, Peru

The Tambopata Research Center (TRC) is the only lodge located within the Tambopata National Reserve, deep in the Amazon jungle. It’s considered one of the most remote lodges in South America and offers a truly unique opportunity to explore the untouched wilderness.

The lodge features 300 meters (almost 1,000 feet) of elevated walkways between the canopy and the jungle floor, where wildlife is often most active.

The longer journey to reach TRC is well worth it for wildlife enthusiasts, as it greatly increases your chances of spotting animals. In fact, one visitor even reported seeing a jaguar with his own eyes! I’m not sure how frequently that happens, but it confirms that if you go deeper in the jungle, there is a good chance of seeing a greater variety of animals.

4. Ecoamazonia Lodge

Location: 26 De Diciembre 435, Puerto Maldonado

Ecoamazonia Lodge is another fantastic choice if you want an authentic Peruvian Amazon lodge experience and has a more economic price tag. Located along the Madre de Dios River, the lodge has spacious and eco-friendly accommodations that look out to the river and have private decks.

They can also arrange guided excursions, such as canopy walks, wildlife spotting, a night walk to see nocturnal creatures, and riverboat trips.

Inkaterra Lodges – Puerto Maldonado

When searching for the best Peruvian Amazon lodges, you’ll likely come across the Inkaterra Lodges in Puerto Maldonado. These properties have spectacular luxury accommodations and are great if you’re looking for an eco-conscious stay.

5. Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción

Location: Río Madre de Dios km 7, Puerto Maldonado

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion is a stunning lodge set along the Madre de Dios River. The lodge has spacious rooms with private terraces, from where you can enjoy the panoramic views of the rainforest.

The lodge is committed to sustainability and offers authentic jungle experiences, ideal for exploring the southern section of the Peruvian Amazon.

While still very elegant, it has a more accessible price tag than its sister property, the Reserva Amazonica.

6. Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Location: Río Madre De Dios Km 15, Puerto Maldonado

Set within a 1,800-acre private reserve, Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is surrounded by biodiversity. Its treehouse-style accommodations are connected by raised canopy walkways, providing easy access to wildlife observation trails.

This is the most luxurious and gorgeous lodge in the area, and definitely the best option if you prize comfort while getting a taste of the Amazon.

The Amazonia Expeditions Tahuayo Lodge sits on the Tahuayo River within the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve.

Tahuayo Lodge, Iquitos, is accessed via a scenic boat ride upstream from the city. Operated by Amazonia Expeditions. The lodge is far more remote, giving you time to fully enjoy your time in the wilderness. It’s an ideal base if you’re an adventurous traveller eager to explore one of the most untouched regions of the Amazon rainforest!

The lodge is not a resort nor a hotel. But it’s more of a rustic yet welcoming base where guides lead wildlife treks, river excursions, and even zipline adventures in the Amazon. Because of its commitment to conservation and research, the Tahuayo Lodge Iquitos has earned recognition for its environmental efforts.

Tahuayo Lodge offers an authentic jungle immersion. This lodge in Iquitos has cabins with screened windows (no glass) so you can hear the forest at night. Rubber boots are provided for muddy trail walks, and the lodge operates on solar power.

10. Treehouse Lodge (Unique Stay)

Location: San Juan Bautista, Iquitos 16320

The Treehouse Lodge is another unique place to stay in the Peruvian Amazon. It’s designed as a true rainforest tree house resort, with elevated bungalows sitting high in the jungle canopy, giving you a rare chance to observe exotic birds and monkeys right at eye level. The treehouses are connected by walkways, making you feel like you have your very own private jungle treehouse.

As a fully all-inclusive treehouse hotel, your meals, excursions, and guided tours are arranged for you. Your dedicated guide tailors each outing, which includes watching pink river dolphins, fishing for piranha, or taking nighttime jungle walks.

11.  Ceiba Tops Lodge, by Explorama 

Location: Amazon River just 40 km (25 mi) from Iquitos

For our next trip to Peru, we are considering a more comfortable Amazon experience at the Ceiba Tops Lodge, operated by Explorama.   Ceiba Tops will be a good option for my neurodiverse boy as it offers the comforts of home, like air conditioned rooms with private bathrooms. In addition they have a hammock house and a swimming pool with a water slide!   There is also free WiFi, a hot tub, and a games room.
