Allow me to begin with a total disclaimer, if you will, as a little background to this post about the best sand free beach towels in Australia. About 2 years ago I was gifted a Tesalate Beach Blanket. It was really love at first sight. You can read my full review of the Tesalate Beach Towel here.

Our First Experience of a Sand Free Beach Mat in Australia
The only problem with that beach mat is that it is designed as a blanket rather than a towel. Though there are similarities between sand free beach towels and sand free beach mats, there can be some clear distinctions between them too.
The other issue is that Tesalate beach towels are pretty expensive: like it costs almost $100 for a single item.
Our Sensory Experience of Sand Free Towels in Australia
My next sand free purchase was a single towel from a company called Jettproof. Why? To start with, I particularly like that JettProof products are proudly designed and manufactured right here in Australia. Sensory clothing is also a must for my son.
If you change your mind about your JettProof purchase, you can return the products in their original condition within 28 days of receipt. Trust me, it’s easy to do (I have done it with clothes my son rejects because they don’t feel right). As my son has strong sensory aversions, we have been frequent purchasers from Jettproof over the years. Their clothing is sensory-friendly and tends to be as free from tags and seams as possible. It is also made with fastenings that feel much more soothing against young skin.

Affordable and Alternative Sandless Towels in Australia
JettProof towels aren’t the cheapest type of sand free towel available in Australia either, however. So if you’re looking for your first sandless beach towel here in Australia, this post focuses on finding the most affordable and highly rated products.
For those seeking a sandless towel or sand free beach blanket in Australia we’ve listed 10 of the top contenders. As alternatives to the pricy Tesalate Australia products, we’ve also covered items like the Sand Cloud Beach Towel. This is a multi-purpose Turkish blanket that dries out quickly, repels sand and works as a mat or a towel.
Read on to find the right towel or blanket for your beach days, from an outdoor blanket that’s also good for picnics to an extra large microfibre or Turkish cotton sand free beach towel!

The Best Sand Free Beach Towels in Australia | What To Look For
Material
The sand free beach blankets featured in the guide are made from microfibre, Turkish cotton of polyester. The latter is different as it’s more of a folding picnic blanket style product, but otherwise you’re looking at Turkish cotton or microfibre when you want a sand proof beach blanket in Australia.
The whole Sand Cloud vs Tesalate debate really boils down to Turkish cotton versus microfibre. Cotton is more absorbent and will soften over time. It’s more durable, but is also heavier.
Microfibre is also soft and quick-drying, though some find it doesn’t feel as absorbent or was warm as cotton. The upside is that even a large beach towel or beach blanket made from microfibre is lighter and faster drying than Turkish cotton.
Size
Do you want small sports and beach towels for each individual or a large beach blanket the whole family can fit on? Beach towels and mats come in all sorts of sizes, from a very portable little microfibre sports towel to a large Turkish mat that can accommodate everyone.
Portability
Some products are like a camping blanket in that they’re designed for easy storage and transportable, whereas with others you simply need to fold or roll them up before stashing in your bag or backpack.
Several products featured here come with their own stuff pouches. This is more common with microfibre towels than with cotton. The picnic blanket type featured also folds down into a tote with a carry handle.
Style
We know, beauty is only skin deep, but you may as well have something you like the look of, right? Some of these come in a large range of designs or colours so you can coordinate your mat to towel with your beach accessories. Or, pick a different one for each person.
Price
Your budget will be important, and with that in mind I’ve included a good range of products at all price levels.
Additional features
One of the products includes a couple of storage pockets, as well as some stakes to anchor it down with. Another useful feature you will come across on some items is a hanging loop, which can be really handy – if you have somewhere to hang the towel up!
A couple of products have also been designed with the environment in mind, which is something we’re very passionate about.
10 of the Best Sand Free Beach Towels and Beach Mats
Sand Cloud Turkish Beach Towel
Some of the best sand free beach towels in Australia are these ones from Sand Cloud, so we had to include them here. They’re just as popular as Tesalate towels are in Australia, but they’re quite different.
Turkish cotton is used to make this towel for the beach, and the one we (and Sand Cloud customers) like best is the ‘Gocek’, named after a small resort town in Turkey. It looks a lot like striped denim and comes in 6 colors, including of course denim blue.
This super soft item can be used as a large beach mat or a towel, and it’s both very absorbent and quick to dry. One of the best features is the fact that it gets even softer over time, and it’s also very strong as only long strand cotton is used to make it. 100% cotton is also great for even sensitive skin.
We think the world of:
- Strong, soft pure cotton
- Absorbent and fast-drying
- 6 colours available
Not so worldly wise:
- Not the most affordable option
- Ships from Amazon US

Ozoola Family Size Beach Mat
This product has a lot to recommend it. If you want a sand free beach towel that is Australian made you can tick that box, although if you want one for a single person this is probably best avoided, as it’s huge! If you want a large beach blanket in Australia then your search could be over. Measuring 180cm by 220cm, this is one of the biggest Australian beach towels on the market. It comes in 4 colours and each has a slightly different weave pattern, including herringbone.
Everyone can fit on this Turkish beach blanket available in Australia and it’s also quick to dry, very soft and absorbent. The only question is – who’s carrying it?
We think the world of:
- 100% Turkish cotton
- Australian company
- Family sized
Not so worldly wise:
- Too big for one person
- Heavier & bulkier

Cacala Turkish Cotton Travel Towel
If you’re looking for lightweight sand free towels in Australia or even to take oversea, this Cacala one is a good option. It’s very affordable, super soft and dries rapidly. Being thinner than some others means it takes up less space and is easier to pack and carry.
This Cacala Turkish cotton towel comes in a range of colours and is ideal for anyone who wants a sand proof beach towel rather than the traditional looped cotton type that traps all the sand!
Being smaller and thinner than the others, it’s perhaps not the best choice as a sand proof beach blanket. So, it is better bought for use as a towel for one person.
We think the world of:
- 100% pure cotton
- Ultra lightweight
- Great value price
Not so worldly wise:
- Thinner cotton
- Not the most absorbent

Cooee Shores Travel & Beach Towel
From a proudly Australian brand comes this beach and sports towel that also serves well as a sand-less beach towel in Australia. It’s definitely been designed to make it easy to carry. I love the carabiner that can clip to a backpack. Ideally, each child can easily take their own one of these along with them!
The eco-friendly carry pouch is a great feature and means you can even pack the towel away wet so it will continue drying as you head home. You can pick between green, purple and blue.
Again this one isn’t the biggest of thickest for sitting or lying down on, but it’s ideal for each person to have – and carry – their own no sand towel.
We think the world of:
- Eco-friendly pouch
- Fast-dry microfibre
- Carabiner clip
Not so worldly wise:
- Limited size
- Won’t keep you warm

SummerSand Oversized Beach Mat & Towel
If you like the look of the family sized Turkish cotton towel detailed above but require something smaller, this one from SummerSand is lighter in weight and bulk. It also contains 88% recycled polyester, so it’s kinder to the planet. The Danish brand are pretty hot on this and we love that!
This product can be used as a sand proof towel or a sand free beach blanket. It’s quick drying and best of all leaves the sand right here on the beach where it belongs (you may already know about my non-love affair with sand). It’s not as big as the Ozoola product, but would suit a couple with one or two small kids perfectly and is certainly lighter to carry to the beach and back.
We think the world of:
- Danish eco brand
- Compact & lightweight
- Generous size
Not so worldly wise:
- Not as warm as cotton
- More expensive than some

Avita Waffle Weave Beach Towel
This Australian themed beach towel is made right here and one of the design options also features the names of some of our best-known beaches. This towel’s unique selling point, though, is the waffle weave microfibre that means it feels thicker and more luxurious than others.
It’s a standard beach towel size, so perfect for one person to carry, lie on and dry off with. Avita say it dries three times more quickly than a usual towel. This towel also has a handy hanging loop and comes with a small face towel as well as a smart branded carry bag. We love it!
We think the world of:
- Australian make
- Waffle weave fabric
- Hanging loop & carry bag
Not so worldly wise:
- Average size

Outdoorable Sandless Beach Mat with Stakes
If you ever worry about your beach towel blowing away during windy weather, this is the one for you! Designed primarily as a beach blanket, it comes complete with stakes for securing it into the sand. It’s also a great beach blanket that’s sand free, and comes with a pouch and carabiner clip.
People who’ve already purchased this Ourdoorable beach picnic blanket love it and wouldn’t be without it, and that’s good enough for us! It’s also 2 metres by 210 centimetres, so it should be big enough to seat the whole family while keeping the sand away from the food and sunscreen. There are even two storage pockets, and these can be removed as required. The only downside is that it’s not really designed for drying off with, but if you’re searching for family beach blankets in Australia it’s ideal.
We think the world of:
- 2 storage pockets
- 6 stakes included
- Pouch & carabiner clip
Not so worldly wise:
- Not designed for drying
- Comes from Amazon US

NewLyfe Sand Free Beach Towel
If you want cheap and cheerful from your beach towel that’s sand free you’ve got it. This NewLyfe beach towel comes in 10 colourful designs, includes a carry bag and offers really good value for money. Which can be important when you have kids to buy for as well as yourself!
It also comes from an Australian family owned business who offer a 2 year warranty on their products, making it a risk-free choice. A little bigger than a standard towel, it’s simple to shake off the sand before hanging it up with the loop provided. This is affordable, Australian branded and looks really good too. The only negative is that it may not be the most sand resistant beach blanket of all.
We think the world of:
- Hanging loop
- 10 attractive designs
- Large size
Not so worldly wise:
- Needs a good shake to get rid of sand

Angemay Beach Mat & Picnic Blanket
This one is more like a typical picnic style product, so it’s good for those searching for a beach mat in Australia rather than a towel. If you want something that folds up neatly this is probably the best sandless beach blanket to go for too, as it converts to a little package with a carrying handle.
The blue striped design is very coastal in theme and the tough polyester backing makes it extra durable. This is also water as well as sand repellent. If you want a traditional style picnic blanket and sand free beach mat in one, then we recommend going for this product.
We think the world of:
- Converts to neat tote
- Stylish coastal look
- Tough fabric
Not so worldly wise:
- Not the softest surface
- Cannot be used for drying

AllBuys Double Sided Beach Towel
This AllBuys beach towel is double sided, so if you get bored of the design you can simply flip it over, which is pretty cool. Both options are really colourful and unusual too, featuring ethnic style designs.
The suede like texture of this one is super soft on the skin and as absorbent as you could wish a microfibre towel to be. One happy customer in Australia even says it’s now used as a bath towel too since it’s so comfortable!
Weighing just over 300 grams, this towel is lightweight to carry and we really like the idea of the different prints on each side.
We think the world of:
- Double sided design
- Super soft finish
- Very lightweight
Not so worldly wise:
- Only 2 options to pick from
