Initially, the Puri Lumbung Cottages were fully booked for the dates we wanted.  So we shifted around our entire itinerary in order to get two nights at this place!

Why?  We found it very difficult to find a nice accommodation in the Munduk area and, additionally, we were absolutely enchanted about the idea of staying in an old fashioned Lumbung among the rice paddies.  We heard it was one of the great places to stay in Bali.

Kids enjoying the Puri Lumbung

To start with, what is a Lumbung?  It is a distinct style of building for the storage and drying of harvested rice and, in this case, converted into a hotel.

The view from our bed!

Did this place fulfill the enchantment that’s promised from the website and other reviews?

Yes, it did!  The hotel is actually almost like out of a dream.  Puri Lumbung is an eco-resort set in a sensational location overlooking a lush green valley with mountains all around and views right to the Java Sea.

We were super excited to be allocated Hut Number 8 which, according to the Lonely Planet guide, is one of the best huts to get!  The hut literally perched overlooking the rice paddies with views to the sea.  While all the huts are small and a little bit rustic, their location and ambiance is absolutely stunning.  We opted for the small double room which was a little bit cramped with an extra bed in it (and our 2.5 -year-old in the double bed) but we also saved quite a bit of money, which made it worthwhile!

Enchanted by beautiful Balinese culture

Additionally, there are other family options which I believe include two separate rooms and a dining room.

There are no fly-screens so you sleep in comfortable beds with gorgeous little mosquito nets over the top, and we left all of our windows open during the night.  It was a wonderfully refreshing cool after the heat of the coast of Bali.  Lulled to sleep by the most amazing chorus of frogs it was like camping.  The night-time sounds were so loud and so incredible it could be hardly believed, and a highlight of the stay.

Is this place a paradise?  Yes, this place is wonderful without a doubt!

Afternoon Exercise through the rice paddies

Suitability For Kids- Puri Lumbung Cottages Munduk

From our experience, the minimum age would be 2.5 to three year old, which can be relied on to not get into too much mischief!  Certainly, there are lots of steep steps, ponds, and rice paddies around the hotel so it’s not suitable for a child that was recently walking or learning to walk!

There was no swimming pool (which is normally a must for a hotel stay!) but we went across the road to the Puri Alam swimming pool.  This was a cute, small infinity pool looking over the jungle.  The pool was perhaps a little bit dirty but certainly cool and refreshing after hot days walking.

The Munduk property is sprawled over a ridge.  While this hotel is ‘central’ to Munduk, to walk “into town” we had to walk along the busy North Coast to Denpasar road.  This was frightening with small children.  The return walk was also very steep.  We only did it once, preferring to eat at the more expensive hotel restaurant than negotiate the busy road in the evening light and with tired kids.

There are lots of activities at Puri Lumbung Cottages

Hotel Activities- Puri Lumbung Cottages Munduk

The hotel offered a range of activities advertised on a whiteboard each day and seemed popular.  Their restaurant offered an excellent range of tasty food, at average prices.  However, it would have been much cheaper to walk into town had it not been for the dangerous road.  Many nights there was a show of Balinese dancing and gamelan performed by locals.

A pool is a “Must” criteria for us when staying in a tropical hotel!  The only thing lacking at the Puri Lumbung Cottages was a pool.  In order to enjoy a pool, we did cross the road and pay a small amount for use at the Puri Alam.
